Apparently he could be a nightmare to work with and was certainly at times rude and abusive to colleagues and friends but he inspired temendous affection and respect, and he had a profound influence on whole genrations of comedians who followed from Python to Eddie Izzard and Harry Hill.Īs did this take on Gerald Manley Hopkins I think his genius was that he saw the humour in the obvious and could identify and express the absurdity of life. When his Goons colleague and friend Harry Secombe died Spike said he was glad because he dreaded the thought of Seacombe singing at his funeral (actually a tape of Secombe singing was played at the service!)
